Essential Oils for Nausea

Nausea can rear its ugly head at any time, even when you least expect it. Almost everyone experiences bouts of nausea throughout their lives. It can occur for various different reasons: you may be stressed or anxious, you may have suffered from food poisoning, perhaps you’re pregnant or maybe you have a headache which is also making you feel sick. All of these reasons can leave you feeling like all you can do is lie down and wait for the nausea to go away. However, there are things you can do to help rid yourself of this symptom in a quick and easy way. Essential oils have been used for years as a natural remedy for many different ailments. There are several essential oils which have been tested and are now known to help aide the feeling of nausea. Below are some of the best oils you can use to help battle nausea:

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint has long been heralded as an amazing natural way to help relieve feelings of nausea. Whilst most people will opt for a peppermint tea (which can of course help), in its purer form as an essential oil peppermint can quickly and directly help to relieve the waves of sickness you may be feeling.

Peppermint oil has been found to have antiemetic properties, meaning that it aides in preventing vomiting (something which everyone tries their best to avoid when feeling nauseous). In addition peppermint oil is also antispasmodic, which means it will aid in stopping the jerking spasms of your gastrointestinal system. These spasms are usually the main cause of nausea, so being able to halt them in their tracks is a great way to make you feel better.

You can use peppermint oil by rubbing a small amount of the oil on the back of your neck. This releases the aroma and allows you to feel soothed continually. Alternatively, you can place some peppermint oil in a bath to help ease your nausea as you relax in the tub.

Ginger Oil

Ginger essential oil is well documented for its effect in helping stop nausea. Ginger is known to aid in the creation of gut enzymes which will help to neutralize stomach acid. Stomach acids are often the cause of nausea and therefore the use of an oil which can help neutralize the acid is one to be noted. In addition ginger essential oil can help in relaxing your stomach muscles and therefore aide in stopping the waves of discomfort that nausea can cause. Remember- ginger is one of the best digestive aides so if you are feeling unwell due to something you’ve digested then taking ginger can help to speed along the digestive process and get unwanted toxins out of your body.

You can use ginger essential oil by applying a few drops over your stomach or put a drop in your hands and inhale the aroma to help make you feel better. You could also fill a bowl with hot water and add some ginger oil, this will circulate the oil into the steam and you can breathe this continuously to help with your nausea.

Lemon Oil

The calming effects lemon essential oil can have on the stomach are not to be missed. Some claim that lemons have even higher calming effects than ginger when it comes to nausea. Lemon essential oil, much like ginger, contains neutralizing acids which help to settle your stomach when you’re feeling sick. As well as this lemons are well known for their cleansing properties and so they can help flush out any bad toxins in your body which may be making you feel nauseous. Interestingly, lemons also help in producing saliva in your mouth which can also help to stop waves of nausea.

You can take lemon essential oil by simply adding some to a glass of hot or cold water. However, most studies which talk of lemon oils success use the oil as an aromatherapy. As with ginger you can set up a hot bowl of water with a few drops of your essential oils within for you to inhale. In fact, why not combine lemon and ginger essential oils for double the effect. The two complement each other very well and will help to stop your nausea quickly.
