Hubert Arlen Monteau (Monte), 88, of Paul Smith’s, died at his home in Vallejo, California on Feb. 16, 2022. He was the first of four children of Margaret Elizabeth Dean and Hubert Arthur Monteau. He attended Easy Street elementary and Saranac Lake High School and Cornell University, Fullerton State University, San Francisco State University and Golden Gate University, and held degrees in accounting, operations research and systems management.

A 20 year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps where he attained the rank of Lt. Colonel, he was an accomplished F-4 pilot, flight instructor, test pilot and military courier with three Navy commendations for aerial expertise. As a junior officer, he was assigned as a military escort to HRH Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip for the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959. He served two tours in Japan and two tours at the Pentagon, where he was budget analyst and speech writer for the Chief of Staff for Marine Air and a member of the Marine Corp Promotions Board. After retiring from the military, he joined the Bank of America in San Francisco, California, where he was employed for 28 years as a systems analyst/engineer.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sister, Nancy, and her husband Tom Smith of Argyle, New York, and brother, Terry, and sister-in-law, Jeanne, of East Greenbush, New York; three cousins, Carole, Maurice, Joyce and their families; 37 nieces and nephews and many friends. Linda, his sister, died in 1986.

He enjoyed and participated in many sports including baseball, handball and racquet ball. He loved his cats, bird watching (with a list of nearly 300 identified), and the natural world. He held life memberships in the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society, and was a supporter of The Nature Conservancy and other environmental causes. He cared for the plight of others and maintained memberships in the ACLU and other liberal and charitable organizations.

He will be remembered for his exceptional duty, wit, endearing charm, generosity and a legacy of wonderful stories. Burial with his first wife, Catherine Hollis, of Ray Brook, who died in 1970, took place with full military honors on May 4 at Fort Rosencrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, San Diego, California. Donations in his memory may be made to the organizations he supported.
