Mary Clater, Obituary (2023) – Vine Grove, KY

Mary Ella Clater, 98, went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023. Her final days were spent with her children and grandchildren.

Mary was born in Holden, West Virgina, on Nov. 8, 1925, to the late, James and Stella Wellman.

Mary had many occupations over her 98-years, beginning when she was 12 years old at an area Tea and Spice shop in Huntington, West Virginia. Other places she worked and things she did include a bakery, five and dime store cosmetic counter, working in a factory like Rosie Riveter, welding wires in radios for the World War II effort, secretary for Dunn and Bradstreet, Ford Motor Company and Commonwealth Insurance Company. Then, in her 50s, she switched careers and became a CNA and live-in caregiver for the next 30 years. Besides being a devoted mother and marvelous cook, she could take anything and make it taste wonderful, she loved being a CNA and live-in caregiver. Mary was known for her loving and compassionate care. Mary became a talented crocheter in her spare time and made many masterpieces over the years.

Family was first. She helped all her family. Mary Ella Clater was called “Mom” by her children, “Mema” and “Grandma” by her grandchildren, “Gi Gi” by her great-grandchildren and “Great-Gi Gi” by her great-great-grandchildren. She, and her late husband, Rufus Clater, raised their children with the utmost love and devotion in Elizabethtown and Louisville. Mary also was preceded in death by her son, David; and grandson, David Henry Solomon Clater.

Survivors include her two daughters, Sandra Connors and her husband, Dennis, and Karen Reid; five grandchildren, Danielle Barrington and her husband, Jesse, Marco Valdez and his wife, Lesli, Jeremy Connors, Kristina Adams and Paul Clater; seven great-grandchildren, Destiny Adams and her significant other, Justin Matheny, Zach Barrington, Gabe Barrington, Elijah Valdez, Ian Valdez, Eden Barrington and Kayla Adams-Bowman; and a great-great-granddaughter, Eloise Matheny. Mary also is survived by her brother-in-law, Marcen Clater, who held a special place in her heart.

Mary’ s funeral service and celebration of life is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home, 205 Highland Avenue in Vine Grove. Burial follows in Forks of Otter Creek Cemetery in Vine Grove.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
