Picard’s Titan Becoming New Enterprise Explained By Showrunner

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Finale – “The Last Generation”Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas explains the decision to turn the USS Titan-A into the new USS Enterprise-G at the end of the series. The Titan was Picard season 3’s hero ship, which endured battles with Captain Vadic’s (Amanda Plummer) heavily-armed starship, the Shrike, a Changeling and Borg takeover, and the Titan even took on the Borg-assimilated Starfleet solo. Surprisingly, the Titan was rechristened into the USS Enterprise-G under the command of Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) one year after the Titan and the USS Enterprise-D saved the Earth from the Borg/Changeling alliance.

Terry Matalas was asked during a Reddit AMA about why the Titan was turned into the Enterprise at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3. The move merged the legacies of the two legendary starships, as opposed to keeping them separate. Read Matalas’ response and quote below:

Terry Matalas: In our mind, we were writing the origin story of the next Enterprise and that the Titan name would live on in a proper new Luna Class ship. The Titan-B. Hopefully glimpsed in some future show.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Was The Origin Of The USS Enterprise-G

Enterprise-G bridge

In hindsight, it is apparent that Star Trek: Picard season 3 was the origin of the USS Enterprise-G all along, as Terry Matalas said. Picard season 3 reunited the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and they were joined by their beloved Galaxy Class starship, the USS Enterprise-D, in the final two episodes. But the Titan-A was stealthily another Enterprise by being a Constitution III Class ship that resembled the Constitution Class NCC-1701 Enterprise commanded by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) instead of the Luna Class starship the previous Titan led by Captain Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) was. The Titan evoked the Enterprise from the outset of Picard season 3 before it officially became the next Enterprise.

There is a segment of Star Trek fans who are upset that the Titan was turned into the Enterprise, however. The complaints online feel that the Odyssey Class USS Enterprise-F, which was briefly seen in Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 9, “Vox,” could have continued as the Federation’s flagship and that the Titan is somehow “too small” compared to the larger Galaxy Class Enterprise-D and the Sovereign Class USS Enterprise-E. Still, the excitement for Star Trek: Legacy, the proposed Star Trek: Picard continuation series that would explore the voyages of the USS Enterprise-G led by Captain Seven of Nine, seems to be universal. Perhaps Star Trek: Legacy could also introduce the Luna Class USS Titan-B, as Terry Matalas hinted.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 is available to stream on Paramount+.
