Two Hardin County restaurants are giving back to the community this Thanksgiving in the form of free meals.
Pappaw’s BBQ & More is having its fourth annual Thanksgiving meal giveaway starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Helmwood Plaza in Elizabethtown.
Donnie Simoneit, co-owner of Pappaw’s, said they served 2,400 meals last year, although they ran out of food. He said their goal this year is to serve 4,000 meals containing turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, dinner roll, pumpkin and a drink.
Those interested can eat their meal at the restaurant or take it to-go.
“It’s a great way to bring the community together,” he said.
Mr. Brown’s Ribs and Soul Food and Who Dat Wingz & Po-Boy is giving out free Thanksgiving meals to the community to anyone in need from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at 1396 N. Dixie Blvd. in Radcliff.
Sonny Williams, business manager of the restaurant, said it is the fourth annual Thanksgiving meal giveaway for the establishment. Each meal, which can either be eaten at the restaurant or taken out, contains turkey, ham, Cajun rice, mac and cheese, yams, cornbread dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce and a dessert.
In February, owner and chef Tyrone Brown Williams died. Sonny said this year’s giveaway is in honor of him. Tyrone was passionate about the project.
“Even though he’s not here with us physically, he’s here with us in spirit,” she said.
Sonny said last year, they served around 500 people, and she said its gets bigger every year as more people learn about it.
From her perspective, she has seen people that are surprised they do the giveaway, and they’re thankful and happy for it. She said some people don’t have families where they can have Thanksgiving with, so they’re glad they can have it with the restaurant’s family.
“It’s a blessing,” she said.
Simoneit said last year’s meal giveaway had a line that had a four-hour wait, which showed to him the continuing need. He said the ultimate point of it for him is to create and maintain that fellowship among community members no matter who they are.
“It’s about making a big family,” he said.
Simoneit said they have received donations from RT Construction and Pepsi to help with the meal giveaway. He said any donations and support will be accepted by either coming to the restaurant or calling at 270-300-5001.
Sonny said they’re still accepting donations of turkey, hams, canned goods and any other items and money. Money can be donated on Cash App at $mrbrownsbbqandwings, and those wanting to donate can call 270-304-8486.
