Select Preps returns in-person tonight | Sports

Many of the area’s top student-athletes will be recognized tonight during The News-Enterprise Select Preps Awards Celebration.

A year after the 2021 awards were held virtually, the event returns to an in-person format at First Christian Church in Elizabethtown this evening. The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m.

Select Preps, which began in 2012, recognizes the student first and athlete second.

Coaches were asked to nominate one student-athlete from their team with a focus on academic standing, as well as community and school involvement, and one student-athlete from each sport is chosen by the newspaper.

In addition to student-athletes being selected in individual sanctioned high school sports, there also are several individual awards in several categories.

A Male and Female Athlete of the Year will be recognized, as well as awards for community service, academics and a teammate award.

The winner of the Mitchell Henry Memorial Award of Courage also is announced. The award is named after Henry, a former Elizabethtown High School student-athlete and 2011 graduate.

Henry went on to Western Kentucky University where he was a standout football player as a tight end. After leaving Bowling Green, Henry spent time at the NFL level with the Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens.

While Henry’s athletic feats are well documented, the main foundation of his life was his deep and unwavering faith. Henry died June 30, 2017, after a seven-month battle against leukemia.

There also are awards for Coach of the Year, Athletic Director of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year.

A special section acknowledging the winners and nominees will appear in the May 27 edition of The News-Enterprise.
